Laine regarded the troll with intense dislike. She usually avoided this path, but the alternative route had been blocked by a fallen tree, so now she was stuck here with the troll, arguing riddles with him in the hopes that she’d eventually get something right and that he’d allow her to pass. She glared at him as he recited yet another, equally annoying rhyme. She didn’t know the answer to this one either, and sighed in exasperation as she yelled out the first word that came into her mind, “Potato” The troll paused, looked dumbfounded for a minute, and then burst out laughing.

Laine couldn’t believe this was happening to her. At this rate, she’d never get to the market, and her mother would be very angry. “Now, look here you…you” she stopped speaking as the troll stopped laughing and raised himself up to his full height, which admittedly, wasn’t very high, but Laine had been warned about the dangers of insulting trolls since she was a young girl. “You… what?” the troll questioned, quietly. Laine took a deep breath and swallowed hard. She wasn’t sure what to say next.

Luckily, the very next moment, she was knocked off her feet and bowled over and over by a brown, furry flurry. She landed in a messed up heap, gasping for breath, “Wha… what the… what happened?” she stammered, still in a bit of a daze, blinking as the…
