Remember, Remember The Fifth Of November
If you’re British, then you probably can’t think about the 5th of November without thinking of Guy Fawkes. This man was the mastermind behind the gunpowder plot- a plan to smuggle barrels of gunpowder under the Houses of Parliament and blow them up, killing the King.
The plot was foiled. Fawkes was hung, drawn and quartered. The pieces of his body were then displayed on spikes as a reminder of what happens to those who rise up against the government, and the King.
MODERN CELEBRATIONS
After this, the King decreed that every year on the fifth of November, that we would build bonfires. Not just little ones in the back yard, but huge massive ones as tall as houses. We were to build what was essentially an effigy of Guy Fawkes and toss him on top, where it would burn as a reminder.
