Five Tips For Aspiring Writers

I’m a member of a Facebook group for creative writers, and almost every day this week, I have seen people posting the same question. I commented a couple of times, but to be quite frank, I got fed up of repeating myself.

So, I thought I’d write a blog post, answering this question with the five tips I would give to a new writer.

1. WRITE, WRITE, AND WRITE SOME MORE.

This is the single most important thing. It doesn’t matter if it’s good or bad. You must write! You can always edit. You can always make your writing better, but if you don’t write, then you have nothing to work with.

2. READ.

I wrote a post on The Essentials Of Reading. I highly recommend it. Reading is so important. Read books in your genre. Read books outside of your genre. Read fiction. Read non fiction. Read craft books. You must be consuming books if you want to write.

3. STUDY YOUR CRAFT.

If you want to cook a meal, you look up recipes and ingredients. You study the method, you weigh out your ingredients, and you follow the instructions. Writing is no different. Study books on form, grammar, descriptions, story, dialogue. There are so many books out there. There are…
